The Children’s Hospice South West

The Children’s Hospice South West is an amazing endeavour that supports children and their families, who are facing life limiting conditions. The Care Staff are particularly important as they have direct contact with the children and their families, ensuring that they all receive a personal service and stand with them through the most difficult times. This group of people, however, often end up giving so much and caring not enough for themselves. Under these conditions the outcome is to turn on one another so that the team becomes strained with conflict. It was at a time like this, that the team realised they needed a retreat to understand what was happening and to find a new way forward. Within a retreat setting of two days, the team was hosted to face their conflicts and more importantly were given the space to discover their own solutions. This was very difficult at first, but was also very generative because they ended the retreat with practical solutions that allowed them to return to balance within the team and continue offering excellent care to the children and families.

Living is a form of not being sure, not knowing what next or how. The moment you know how, you begin to die a little. The artist never entirely knows. We guess. We may be wrong, but we take leap after leap in the dark.
